Duncan Creek Art Club 2011-2012

YIPPEE!!

Thank you to all the students who applied to Art Club and are now members! To apply, students had to fill out an application that included art questions and students had to create a self portrait. Thank you to the 29 entries!! We will see all 29 members at our first meeting - a parent letter will be going home this week with each member. See you then!

We were lucky enough to have two artists at Duncan Creek on morning announcements to announce the new art club members.A special thanks to Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh - thanks for coming to our school!

A LOT has been happening!

1st week of school

It's been a great first week back! Getting back into a routine is always challenging as are new schedules and new procedures, but also exciting in the outlook of a new school year. Great to see alot of familiar faces but also looking forward to getting to know the new faces in our school this year. This week, students watched a powerpoint presentation on the art room and the art room rules. We discussed proper art room behavior and also pointed out where our day to day art supplies are located - it always amazes me when a student will ask, "where's the sink?".
1st through 5th graders assembled their art sketchbooks. Each grade is color coded for easy identification. During this process we discuss bookmaking and the students were introduced to a few bookmaking terms. Sketchbooks will be kept on the art room for practice drawing, sketching, and writing assignments and be used throughout the year, and will be taken home in May with a menagerie of drawings, writings, handouts, doodles, and definitions. Looking forward to another great week and making some ART!

2011-2012 School Year.....

....is nearly here!
Summer is nearly over and a new school year is about to begin. I am excited to get back into the art classroom and teach something new (and learn something new!).
This has been a great summer but now looking forward to all the new lessons for the new school year. Be on the look out for new art news and photos of new art work coming your way soon. If you have some time and would like to volunteer in the art classroom, please email me - any amount of time will be appreciated.
Looking forward to seeing all the students!
Mrs. Craig :)

All grades

A ton of pics from all grades so far this year.....

Time flies......

WOW! I haven't posted in a while - I may have A LOT to say.
Glad to be back at school after Winter Break I AND II - with the snow/ice storm that hit us right after we got back to school in January. Those days home were great - if only I knew I was going to be homebound for 10 days - I would have brought more stuff from school home to work on - oh, well. I did get a chance to work on my own art.
Big news was taking place at Duncan Creek on January 18 - 21, 2011. We were lucky enough to have a visiting artist at our school. Mavis Stevens, fiber/textile artist was at our school and shared with our students her work, and her stories. We had a great time listening to her during her "spinning" demonstration as she spun fibers into thread. All students got the opportunity to visit the art room during her visit and be part of her audience. A big thanks to the admin, staff and students for welcoming Mavis and making her feel like a part of "the CREEK". And a big thanks to Mavis for sharing her passion with all of us. You can find out more about Mavis at her website - www.mavisstevens.com.

Since DCES hosted a fiber artist, it seems only fitting that students create fiber masterpieces as well. All grades will begin a lesson on fiber/textiles and/or weaving. Photos will be posted soon.
